Picture editing is one of the most important creative aspects of filmmaking. The editor works closely with the director and/or showrunner to bring the filmmaker's vision to life, shaping the film's pacing, rhythm, and emotional impact. Editing is both a creative and a technical part of the post-production process of filmmaking. This course provides an introduction to working in the Picture Editing Department of a DGC feature or series.
Topics covered include:
Who is in the department and what they do;
The roles of the department in pre-production;
Dailies processing and prepping;
The roles of the editor and the assistant during the various stages of cuts;
Turnover at picture lock. All will be looked at from the perspective of the role of assistant editor, particularly an entry-level assistant.
