Working as a Set PA is an essential starting point to the Assistant Directing Department and a common entry point to the many other positions held on a film set. During this half day workshop, you will be given an overview of the Assistant Directing Department with a focus on the role of Set Production Assistant. We will look at how to prepare for your first day of work, and what will be expected of you during the workday. There will be an emphasis on familiarizing participants with the essential paperwork including Start Packs, Call Sheets, Sides and Background Performer work reporting. Working as a Set Production Assistant in the Assistant Director department has many duties above and beyond being a 'set runner'. The workshop is designed to walk you through a typical day in the life of a Set PA.
Topics covered include:
Intro to the AD Department (who's who); Safety on set; Deal Memos and Work Permit Application Forms (your start pack); What to bring on your first day, and who to report to; Duties on set -- what you may be asked to do; How to read the call sheet to prepare for the next day and the days ahead; Walkie lingo and proper etiquette; Set etiquette (including the use of cell phones); Working with the other AD team members; Assisting with BG processing and 'wrangling'; Background paperwork (including ACTRA vouchers); Other production paperwork to be aware of (DPR, DOOD, Time Sheets, One-liner, etc.); Wrapping background performers, and more

Andrew Sutherland is an Assistant Director from Nova Scotia with over a decade working as a 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st AD on more than two dozen DGC-signatory productions. Andrew has experience on both small-budget, locally made indie features, large-budget American series, and everything in between. His most recent credits include 2nd AD on two recent Hallmark Christmas movies; Christmas Island and Secret Gifts of Christmas, and the US Epix series From seasons 1 and 2, as 1st AD on Monica's News, as 3rd AD on Washington Black, Kids vs Aliens, Chapelwaite, Books of Blood, Pure, and several seasons of Trailer Park Boys adventures, to name just a few. Andrew last worked in PEI on the CBC series Cavendish.
