Happy February!

I can't believe how fast January flew by! We've been busy in the office with meetings and conference calls to clarify the new Canada Council guidelines for our funding. There have been many discussions with Telefilm and the Independent Production Fund to better understand their funding programs. We've been renting a ton of equipment to the membership and pulling together workshops.  And we've be chatting with local organizations about partnering up on some great projects!

This past month our IMAC FilmClub partnered with WIFT-AT to screen "Suffragette" as a group at City Cinema. The screening was sold out and we had a large gathering at Local 343 where WIFT-AT talked about the upcoming Women Making Waves conference happening in March and IMAC gave out City Cinema tickets.

This month was mostly about laying groundwork. We have also had a lot of activity in the membership which I'm excited to share with you. So keep reading!!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Laura Florian
Laura Florian was born and raised on Prince Edward Island. She attended NSCAD University & attained a BFA & Film Major. As an enthusiastic artist, Laura continues to utilize her skills whether it is in editing, facilitating eastern philosophy, film, singing or sound recording, mixing & design. Laura is also currently on the IMAC Board of Directors.

In March 2012, Laura and her husband Adam Florian founded Floski Productions. Their work focuses on documentaries and artistic films. Laura is currently sound recording, mixing & designing the Red Rock Wrestling TV show with Local Island Wrestling Entertainment called “Red Rock Rewind” now airing on Bell Aliant TV1.

Floski Productions started filming Red Rock Wrestling (RRW) shows at the Stratford Town Hall back in 2013 when they decided to do a short film meditating on professional wrestling and local promoter/wrestler 'Kowboy' Mike Hughes. As a whole, the film aims to deliver an intimate look into the misunderstood art-form known as Professional Wrestling. They expanded that project with their love & respect of wrestling entertainment and continued to film all of RRW’s live shows. Through Floski Production’s collaboration with the dedication & aspirations of Mike Hughes & his wife Sheri Atkinson, they were able to get a broadcast contract. The shows air bi-weekly but can be also seen online on TV1. (Click on “Sports” and then click “Wrestling” to watch!)

A Small Fortune gets love in Toronto

Jason Arsenault and Adam Perry completed their first week of the NSI Features First Program. Their time was spent learning about the marketplace, workshopping the script and refining their pitch before presenting their project to Distributors, Broadcasters and Producers.

A Small Fortune was very well received by everyone in attendance;  everyone is very confident it will get made!

An out-of-work fisherman tries to provide for his pregnant girlfriend in a quaint fishing village along the coastline of Prince Edward Island. Their hard luck changes when they discover $25,000 cash in a bag on the beach. The think the money is a blessing before the bloated body of a stranger washes up shortly thereafter, ruining their plans.
Monica Lacey's digital photo series shows at the Craig Gallery in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia from Feb 4th to 28th.

"Couples on Couches"
is a photo series featuring portraits of real-life couples pictured on their own couches in their homes. The people in the images include parents, entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, writers, healers, scientists, and scholars, and all either live in Prince Edward Island or have ties to the province. The goal of this project was initially an aesthetic one and I approached couples whose looks I think make a really interesting pair. The project slowly took on a role of documenting my immediate social landscape, my experience of being part of a couple, and the other examples I see of this dynamic in my daily life. The models were asked to remain straight-faced and keep a distance from each other. In a sense each image presents a different version of the same couple, together yet separate, in an environment created by the two of them. This project is presented thanks to the generous support of The Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts."
Just Passing Through Season 2 launches!!!

Just Passing Through is a Canadian comedy series created by Jeremy Larter, Geoff Read, and Jason Larter.  The show currently has two seasons; Season 1 was released in November 2013, and Season 2 debuted in January 2016. There are 12, full length episodes in total.

The series follows two rough-and-tumble 'cousints' from PEI, Terry and Parnell Gallant. In
season 1, they stop in Toronto when their car breaks down while on their way to 'get loaded rich' in Alberta. When they realize their cousin(t) Owen lives in Toronto, they decide to crash with him before getting back on the road. But one thing leads to another, and, to Owen's dismay, Terry and Parnell show no signs of leaving Toronto - or Owen's living room.

Season 2 finds Terry and Parnell back on the Island after making big money out west - although, it's worth noting, they ended up in a Saskatchewan potash mine rather than the originally planned Alberta oilsands. They drum up a plan to get Owen, along with good friends Alex and Vanessa, to join them for a 'PEI pogey summer.' Season 2 introduces the audience to more of the Gallant family, more romance, and more PEI shenanigans than ever before.
Harmony Wagner will be participating in a panel discussion about Micro-Budget Filmmaking at the Women Making Waves Conference, Saturday, March 5th in Halifax, NS.

She will be joined by Elaine Shannon of New Brunswick and Ashley Mackenzie of Cape Breton and the panel will be moderated by independent filmmaker Ingrid Veninger.

WMW is about celebrating women in the industry but by no means is it strictly for women. So please, join us in 2016 for our sixth year running!"

April 4 ---- PEI Screenwriters' Bootcamp writing and producing mentorships

The Island Media Arts Coop (IMAC) is looking for creative writers who want to develop skills in writing for the screen-based entertainment industry. The focus on this year’s PEI Screenwriters’ Bootcamp will be on writing web series and features. Participants will be offered five days of intensive project-based training and an opportunity to experience first-hand the behind-the-scenes exchanges that take place in the industry. Among the mentors will be Cynthia Whitcomb, author of Writing,  Sharon Buckingham, script editor and author of several Canadian productions, Tom Shoebridge, a nine-year veteran of Bootcamp, Hannah Cheesman and Mackenzie Donaldson, co-creators of the hit web series, Whatever, Linda.

Organizers are also excited to be offering a session on pitching and on marketing. More information is available on both the IMAC and PEI Screenwriters' Bootcamp websites.

Ms. Louise Lalonde, Project Coordinator, said: “This is our tenth year offering this training, and we have a long list of success stories. I encourage anyone interested in the media industry to apply. There are no workshop fees and participants are selected based on the appeal of their idea and writing abilities. For those interested in producing, we are celebrating women this year and are offering five seats to women who want to break into the industry as producers. This is all part of our ten-year anniversary celebration. Any woman interested in investigating producing as a career move should get in touch with me.”

IMAC is working closely with all of its sponsors, in particular, Telefilm Canada, Innovation PEI, the City of Charlottetown, the Independent Production Fund, the Harold Greenberg Fund, and Super Channel by offering these workshops to Atlantic Canadians and helping to build our Canadian screen-based entertainment industry one story at a time.

The deadline for submissions is April 4, 2016 and the workshops are being held from May 20-25, 2016 at the Haviland Club in Charlottetown, PEI. For more information, do not hesitate to visit www.peiscreenwritersbootcamp.net or call Louise Lalonde at (902) 213-7684.

Telefilm's Micro-budget Production Program  is extending its eligible projects to include feature films and web series. Make sure you get your applications ready early. That means an outline, trailer and marketing plan. It's best if you have at least a first draft of your script ready to submit as well.  Our past micro-budget winners Harmony Wagner and Jason Rogerson discussed their experiences and offered tips on the application process. See that video here.  IMAC's internal deadline is Feb 29th.
Independent Production Fund has a March 1, 2016 deadline for the first stage of their web drama series program. It's good to peruse their guidelines to ensure that you have your application up to snuff. There's tough competition for this program BUT we've had 2 IMAC members win this prize.
