New Film Incentives Announced at the Province
Thursday, May 6, 2021 (CHARLOTTETOWN, PE): FilmPEI is thrilled at today’s announcement by the Province to expand its film industry incentives to make PEI more nationally competitive. The Canadian film and television industry is booming making it the perfect time for PEI to make this kind of commitment.
“As the film industry association, FilmPEI spent a lot of time with Minister MacKay and Innovation PEI to collaborate on the best way forward for the film industry on PEI. We are very excited that the Government of Prince Edward Island has heard the voices of the local film community and is providing the sector with the necessary incentives to make the Island competitive in the national and global market.” Renee Laprise, Executive Director of FilmPEI.
The news today will most definitely kickstart a thriving and sustainable ecosystem that will allow local filmmakers and crew the opportunity to build careers in their field on PEI. In the last year many people with film industry ties have returned home to PEI to ride out the Covid-19 situation. Many others have contacted FilmPEI in the hopes that an industry would be developed enough to sustain their livelihoods if they were to return.
The film sector is unique in that it requires a wide variety of skillsets in order to accomplish even the smallest project so the opportunity for employment is high. And the spend in local communities, for example, on lodging and restaurants will have a big impact on local economies.
As the industry association FilmPEI will continue to work with the Province to develop the industry and build infrastructure and crew capacity. FilmPEI also functions an artist cooperative by developing local talent and building creative careers through training, production support and career counselling. With the new PEI Film Production Fund in place there will now be more opportunities for Island stories to be filmed locally allowing our creative voices and unique landscapes to be shared with the world.
